Geosyntec to Present on Beach Beneficial Use Impairment at Central States Water Environment Association Virtual Annual Meeting
Rica Enriquez, Ph.D., (Minnesota), Rishab Mahajan, P.E., CFM, CPSWQ (Illinois), and Beth Toot-Levy (Ohio) will present on "Lakeview Beach Beneficial Use Impairment Assessment: City of Lorain, Ohio" at the Central States Water Environment Association's (CSWEA) 93rd Annual Meeting from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. EDT on August 18, 2020.
The V-Tech conference will feature experts who have advanced technology, methods, and studies in the water industry.
Rica Enriquez is an Engineer based in Minnesota with more than 11 years of experience focused on modeling atmospheric, oceanic, and fluvial flows. Her modeling work has included hydrodynamic, sediment transport, and contaminant fate and transport modeling in rivers, reservoirs, lakes, estuaries, and power plants. She applies modern data analysis, GIS, and visualization techniques to support these applications.
Rishab Mahajan is a water resources Project Engineer focused on hydrodynamic, sediment transport and water quality modeling with a focus on regulatory permits and requirements, stormwater management, surface water system assessments, total maximum daily load (TMDL) development and implementation, and nutrient criteria limit development. His experience includes the development and calibration of hydrodynamic, sediment transport and water quality models, including one-dimensional (1-D), 2-D, and 3-D models. Rishab specializes in geographic information system (GIS) analysis and programming in Java, Visual Basic, and database management.
Beth Toot-Levy is a Project Scientist based in Ohio with more than 19 years of experience working in the field of environmental and regulatory compliance. Her expertise includes Clean Water Act (CWA) compliance, water quality standards, water quality and environmental monitoring, risk communication, watershed management, industrial and municipal pretreatment, integrated planning, and many other aspects related to local, state, and federal compliance with the CWA.

Presentation DescriptionThe presentation will focus on the development of a nearshore circulation model of Lake Erie to simulate the circulation patterns in the nearshore area of Lakeview Park Beach in Lorain, OH. The beneficial use of recreation at Lakeview Park Beach (Lorain, Ohio) is impaired due to high levels of Escheria coli (E. coli). The nearshore model was used to evaluate the impact of potential sources (nearshore surface runoff, Black River, wastewater treatment plant or WWTP discharge) and the current breakwall configuration on the beach water quality. The model was also used to evaluate the effectiveness of conceptual management alternatives such as relocation of outfall and breakwall to address the impairment. The presentation will demonstrate how coastal modeling can be leveraged to assess infrastructure changes along coastal and lakefront communities. This project was in partnership with the City of Lorain, Ohio and Coldwater Consulting.
