Lelio Mejia Elected to National Academy of Engineering
Lelio Mejia, Ph.D., P.E., G.E. (California) has been elected to the Civil Engineering Section of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for the evaluation, design, and construction of embankment dams and foundation systems, and contributions to geotechnical earthquake engineering.
Election to National Academy of Engineering membership is one of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer. Members have distinguished themselves in business and academic management, in technical positions, as university faculty, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations. Members are elected to NAE membership by their peers (current NAE members).
Lelio is a Senior Principal Engineer based in California with more than 35 years of experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering. For many years, he has focused on the challenges of dam and levee engineering and is a leading international authority in this field, with emphasis on the seismic design and performance of dam structures. Lelio leads Geosyntec's Western U.S. dams and levees practice and is a registered civil and geotechnical engineer.
The Civil Engineering Section of NAE is focused on engineering related to infrastructure systems, natural and built environments, and facilities that require environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, construction, water resources, coastal, or ocean engineering.
NAE is an independent, nonprofit institution established by President Abraham Lincoln that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The mission of the National Academy of Engineering is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology.
Lelio joins Geosyntec Senior Principals Rudolph Bonaparte, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, NAE (Georgia) and Michael Kavanaugh, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, NAE (California) as fellow members of the NAE. This representation of Geosyntec personnel is a reflection of the firm's strong commitment to engineering excellence and leadership in the profession.
