Lelio Mejia to Deliver Keynote at New Zealand Society on Large Dams (NZSLD) Workshop

Lelio Mejia, Ph.D. (California) will deliver the keynote lecture at the 2019 NZSOLD-ANCOLD Pre-Conference Workshop on October 9, 2019 in Auckland, New Zealand.

As part of the Resilient Dams in an Earthquake Environment workshop, Lelio will present "Evaluation of Earthquake-Induced Cracking of Embankment Dams," an overview of available methods to assess the potential for earthquake-induced cracking of embankment dams and propose a new approach to evaluate embankment dam cracking. In addition, he will illustrate the evaluation of cracking using three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic analyses through a case history of the dynamic response analysis of Lenihan Dam during the M 6.9 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

Hosted by the New Zealand Society on Large Dams and the Australian National Committee on Large Dams, this year the combined event's theme is "Resilient Dams for Resilient Communities." The conference will review the current state of practice, share best practices, and explore present and future challenges that must be worked collaboratively to address the impacts of natural disasters, climate change, and population growth on infrastructure and communities.

Lelio is a Senior Principal Engineer based in California with more than 35 years of experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering. For many years, he has focused on the challenges of dam and levee engineering and is a leading international authority in this field, with emphasis on the seismic design and performance of dam structures. Lelio leads Geosyntec’s Western U.S. dams and levees practice and is a registered civil and geotechnical engineer.
