John Merrill, Elisabeth Hawley, and Rula Deeb Coauthored an Article about Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in EWRI Currents

John Merrill, Elisabeth Hawley, P.E. (California), and Rula Deeb, Ph.D., BCEEM (California) coauthored an article entitled "Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): Key Issues and Environmental Responses" that was published in Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Currents on pages 11-12 in Volume 21, Number 2. EWRI is a subset of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

John is a Staff Engineer based in California focused on environmental site assessment and remediation, litigation support, and applied research projects in collaboration with university partners. His experience includes experience related to emerging contaminants, including PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, and 1,2,3-tricholorpropane (TCP).

Elisabeth is a Senior Consultant based in California with more than 17 years of experience focused on environmental restoration projects involving site characterization, fate and transport, remediation, strategies to achieve site closure, litigation support, and green and sustainable remediation. She specializes in services related to various contaminants of emerging concern, including PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, TCP, N-nitroso-dimethylamine (NDMA), pharmaceuticals, and personal care products.

Rula is a Senior Principal Civil and Environmental Engineer based in California with more than 25 years of experience in private practice and academia addressing the cross-media fate and transport of contaminants, and the remediation of complex soil and groundwater sites. In addition to leading PFAS projects all over the United States for industrial, federal and municipal clients, she has joined forces with multiple universities to develop new technologies for sampling and treating PFAS in a variety of environmental media.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used in a variety of industrial and consumer products and are highly stable, recalcitrant, and bioaccumulative. Health-based advisory levels for several PFAS are low, and state guidance continues to rapidly evolve in the absence of near-term Federal action; consequently, site investigations for PFAS are burgeoning in several states and continuing within the DoD. PFAS remediation is costly and primarily consists of ex-situ water treatment. Research to develop feasible in-situ treatment technologies and more effective ex-situ treatment systems is currently a priority for U.S. EPA and DoD research and development programs.
