David Espinoza to Present on Resilient and Sustainable Design in the Face of Natural Hazards at Purdue Geotechnical Society Workshop

David Espinoza, Ph.D., P.E. (Maryland) will present "Transitioning to Resilient/Sustainable Design in the Face of Natural Hazards" at the Purdue Geotechnical Society Workshop at the Burton Morgan Center at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana at 3:55 p.m. on April 26, 2019.

David is a Senior Principal Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineer based in Maryland focused on foundation design over soft soils, design of regulated containment facilities, and financial risk analysis for geoenvironmental projects.

His project experience includes permitting of disposal facilities for municipal solid waste, construction demolition debris, and industrial manufacturing wastes/residuals; design of the full range of components for containment facilities such as stormwater systems, leachate collection systems, and landfill gas collection; and the environmental remediation of contaminated sites.

The Purdue Geotechnical Society was founded in May 2003 to enhance the strong bond and working relationship among alumni, faculty, students, and staff.

Adopting resilient/sustainable designs for our infrastructure requires a long-term mentality of the stakeholders (owners, public, designers, politicians). In order to unleash geotechnical engineers' ability to propose resilient/sustainable solutions, we need to understand what drives the decision-making process so we can not only convince decision makers (e.g., elected officials, investors) that the proposed solution is adequate but also give them the tools to convey their stakeholders that the solution adopted is optimal. This presentation will discuss the problems with short-term mentality in the development of engineering solutions and strategies to achieve adoption of long-term resilient/sustainable designs.
