Herwig Goldemund and Tom Wurzinger Contributed to the Georgia Air & Waste Management Association Regulatory Conference

Herwig Goldemund, Ph.D. and Tom Wurzinger, P.E. (Georgia) contributed to the Georgia Air & Waste Management Association (GA A&WMA) Regulatory Conference at the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center on April 11, 2019.

Herwig's presentation "Introduction to PFAS Remediation Approaches," covered how per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a broad class of fluorine-containing synthetic chemicals that are part of a growing list of "emerging contaminants," which have recently received increased regulatory and public attention, including in the southeastern United States. Manufacturers and utilities in northeast Alabama, northwest Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, military installations throughout the Southeast, and the local communities in these areas are all faced with challenges related to PFAS compounds. This talk presented a brief introduction to PFAS issues and focused on the treatment challenges to remove these compounds from wastewater, impacted groundwater, and drinking water.

Tom served as organizer for the April 11th GA A&WMA Annual Regulatory Update Conference. Leaders from the EPA, GA EPD, and regulatory professionals provided updates on various regulations and policies. Proceeds for the conference go to fund the annual student scholarship program.

Herwig has over 19 years of academic and professional experience as an environmental scientist and project manager. His experience prior to joining Geosyntec includes college-level teaching, laboratory and field-scale research, land application of industrial residues, and nutrient and trace element (i.e., metals) transport in the vadose zone. Since joining Geosyntec, he has focused his work on soil and groundwater geochemistry, site assessment and remediation under CERCLA, RCRA, and state-led regulatory programs, with emphasis on issues related to contaminant fate and transport (specializing in trace elements and inorganics), contaminant sequestration, bioavailability and uptake, and the use of passive remediation technologies such as phytotechnologies, constructed wetlands, and natural attenuation.

Tom is an Environmental Engineer with over 13 years of experience focused on compliance, site investigations, remediation, and sampling.  At Geosyntec, he is responsible for performing and managing geotechnical, hydrogeologic and remedial site investigations as well as environmental compliance management for hazardous waste and stormwater.
