Marc Rogoff (Florida) will represent Geosyntec and provide expert solid waste advisory services for a three-stop tour in Boston, Connecticut, and Chicago) as part of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) reverse trade mission (RTM), China Clean Energy Study Tour for Urban Waste Management, in October and November 2018. 

The program is designed to familiarize urban policy leaders from China with U.S. urban waste recycling and sustainable construction solutions, policies, best practices, technologies, products and services.  The program's participants will include municipal solid waste managers and government policy/regulatory officials from key population centers in China.

As China increases its urban infrastructure development, managing construction waste has become an important focus of China's government. According to a forecast by the China Construction Industry Association, China will produce about 600 million tons of construction waste annually over the next ten years. This amount equates to roughly 30% of the world's total waste caused from construction. This waste can pollute water, air, and soil located at construction sites and at landfills were the waste is eventually taken. While the majority of waste created during construction projects can be recycled and reused, China currently only recycles less than five percent of its construction waste.

When compared to neighboring country Japan, which recycles 95% of its construction waste, China's waste recycling industry has significant room for growth. To address this issue, the State Council of China recently set official targets for urban waste recycling, and local governments are under pressure to manage this waste to avoid heavy taxes that were implemented in early 2018. China plans to invest $38 billion in construction waste management over the next twelve years, which offers significant opportunities for U.S. companies.

The proposed construction waste recycling RTM would introduce Chinese delegates from both the public and private sectors to U.S. companies that offer machinery specifically designed to sort and recycle materials during the construction process, as well as technologies that treat solid waste and wastewater materials.
