Tyler McNabb (Tennessee) will deliver a presentation entitled "Overview of the Vapor Intrusion Regulatory Environment and Associated Risk Drivers" to the Health Environment Economic Development Industry at the Tennessee Environment Conference from 10:45-11:20 a.m. on March 14, 2018.

Tyler McNabb is a Senior Staff Geologist based in Tennessee currently focused on site investigations; soil vapor surveys; soil and groundwater remediation involving chlorinated solvents, PCBs, metals, and petroleum hydrocarbons; and conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and limited compliance reviews.

The Tennessee Environmental Conference is planned by a committee representing academia, industry, government and community organizations who have a vested interest in improving health, environment and the economy in Tennessee. Now in its 17th year, the Tennessee Environment Conference has grown every year. This year's event, "To Improve Our Public Health and Environment through Smart Choices," will feature more than 40 presenters addressing the latest trends, practices, and policies aimed at preserving resources, balancing growth, improving human health, and protecting the environment. The conference will host environmental professionals seeking knowledge and sharing ideas that address environmental concerns in Tennessee.

Abstract

Tyler will discuss how vapor intrusion (VI) has gained regulatory interest nationally and in Tennessee due to risks associated with exposure to volatile chemical vapors in indoor air stemming from impacted soil and/or groundwater.  The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) released draft VI guidance in 2002 and updated VI guidance, in June 2015.  This guidance is often used as the basis for development of state VI regulatory programs.  Tennessee currently does not have VI regulations; however, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Division of Remediation (DOR) released a VI investigation flow chart for DOR project managers and other interested parties in March 2016, indicating that state regulations may be instituted in the near future.  This presentation will provide an overview of the VI regulations across the country and discuss likely VI investigation and mitigation requirements that may be promulgated in Tennessee.
