Rudolph Bonaparte Awarded the 2018 Karl Terzaghi Lecture on Geotechnical Stability

Rudolph Bonaparte, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, NAE, (Georgia) will present the 2018 ASCE Karl Terzaghi Lecture at the International Foundations Congress and Equipment Expo in Orlando, Florida from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on March 8, 2018.

His lecture, entitled "Geotechnical Stability of Waste Fills – Lessons Learned and Continuing Challenges," will address the reasons behind recent failures of waste fills (e.g., landfills, CCR impoundments, mine tailings piles) and how we might reduce these occurrences through improvements in engineering design, construction, and operations.

Rudy's award continues Geosyntec's record of distinguished service to the profession. In 2008, Geosyntec's former Chairman of the Board, J.P. Giroud, Ph.D., delivered the Terzaghi lecture.

Having served as CEO of Geosyntec Consultants for 20 years, Rudy is currently a Senior Principal Engineer and Chairman of the Board. He is also a part-time Professor of the Practice in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Rudy has more than 30 years of professional experience focused on the areas of: geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering; contaminated site, waterway, and sediment assessment and remediation; and solid, hazardous, and low-level radioactive (LLR) waste disposal facility permitting and design. He is a licensed professional engineer in 17 states.

This will be the 54th ASCE Karl Terzaghi Lecture. It was established by the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division (now the Geo-Institute) of ASCE by the solicitation of gifts from the many friends and admirers of Karl Terzaghi, Hon.M.ASCE. The lecture is awarded, upon the recommendation of the Board of Governors of the Geo-Institute, to a distinguished engineer who will deliver the Terzaghi Lecture at an appropriate meeting.
