Geosyntec Project Wins Water/Environment Industry Award

The Sutton Brook Disposal Area Superfund Site Remediation Project in Tewksbury, Massachusetts has been selected as the winner of the 2017 Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Alliant Build America Award in the Environmental Enhancement category.

Geosyntec performed remedial design and construction quality assurance services, Charter Contracting Company served as the project's general contractor, and Engineering Management, Inc. was the project coordinator. This is the second recent award for the project, which also was awarded 2016's Best Project in the Water/Environment Category by ENR New England.

The Sutton Brook Disposal Area was an inactive unlined landfill divided into two lobes by Sutton Brook. The site included a 40-acre landfill, a former drum disposal area, and contaminated sediments in the brook. Geosyntec's remedy included soil and waste consolidation under a RCRA cap and a subsurface soil-bentonite wall to divert contaminants from entering Sutton Brook to a groundwater extraction system that discharges to the local sewer system. Through Geosyntec's efforts on the design and construction monitoring, and Charter's efforts during construction, we helped to substantially complete construction in less time and for lower cost than estimated in the Record of Decision.

AGC President Mark Knight and representatives from Alliant Insurance Services Inc. presented the award to the project team, including representatives from Charter and Geosyntec, during AGC's 98th Annual Convention in Las Vegas in March.
