David Roman (Maryland) led a stormwater project for Geosyntec at Conowingo Elementary School (Maryland) that was featured in an article entitled "Rainwater Retrofit" in Stormwater Solutions Magazine on June 7, 2017.

In June 2014, the Cecil County Department of Public Works Development Services was provided a grant agreement to add stormwater solutions to Conowingo Elementary School.

Geosyntec installed a system to collect rainwater and save the rainwater to irrigate the landscape. While this system has a practical use, the system also provides education about water use and reuse. This met the goals of both enriching the landscape of the school and increasing environmental education.

The construction of the stormwater project was scheduled without interfering with the normal schoolday, and the Development Services Division of the Cecil County Department of Public Works collaborated with Cecil County Public Schools to realize this project. These two departments also will ensure that the new system is sustained and included in the school's curriculum.

Geosyntec installed a 2,500-gallon cistern and electronically actuated drain and irrigation valves and sensors in a way that allows students to observe the many pieces of the system.

One way the school promotes environmental education through the stormwater system is by allowing teachers to release water from the cistern for irrigation. The system also tracks and predicts weather forecasts, which allows the tank to have maximum storage before each rainstorm by releasing water before the storm hits.

The article also discusses the other systems that were installed as well as the lasting impact of the stormwater system.
