Lelio Mejia Joins Geosyntec’s Geotechnical and Earthquake Engineering Practice in Oakland

Geosyntec is pleased to announce that Lelio Mejia, Ph.D., P.E., G.E. has joined the firm as a Senior Principal in our Oakland, California office. Dr. Mejia will take a leading role in the continued development of the firm’s geotechnical and earthquake engineering practice, with a focus on dams and levees.

Dr. Mejia has devoted much of his 35-year career to the challenges of dam and levee engineering. He is a leading international authority in this field, with emphasis on the seismic design and performance of dam structures. He has directed the investigation and seismic stability evaluation of more than 25 large earth dams, and has been involved in the design and construction of more than 15 major dam projects worldwide. Most recently, he was project manager and chief engineer for the design and construction inspection of a large embankment dam that is part of the $5.25 billion expansion of the Panama Canal.

At Geosyntec, Dr. Mejia will lead the Western U.S. dams and levees practice, while collaborating closely with other senior professionals in the firm to assist clients throughout the United States and internationally on dam, geotechnical and earthquake engineering projects. He will also continue to advance the state of practice by serving on expert review panels for dams and other projects: as Chair of the United States Society on Dams (USSD) Earthquakes Committee; as a Member of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) Committee on Seismic Aspects of Dam Design; and as a Member of the National Research Council (NRC) Committee for the State of the Art and Practice in Earthquake Induced Soil Liquefaction Assessment.
