Geosyntec Announces New Location in Washington, D.C.

Geosyntec Consultants is pleased to celebrate our new Washington, D.C. location with an open house gathering on December 5, 2016.

Neal Durant, Ph.D., Senior Principal Engineer

Dr. Durant is a Senior Principal Engineer with over 28 years of experience serving as a consultant and advisor to multi-national corporations and government agencies on matters involving quantification, management, and remediation of environmental liabilities. Clientele include IT services companies, aerospace manufacturers, industrial chemicals manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, waste companies, energy utilities, and law firms. Known internationally for his expertise in remediation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater, Dr. Durant has been retained as a subject matter expert and written guidance manuals on this topic for the U.S. Navy, U.S. EPA, U.S. Air Force, Swedish EPA, and Danish EPA. He has designed or directed design of remediation systems at over 50 sites, and served as an expert witness regarding remediation costs. On Geosyntec's behalf, Dr. Durant serves on the Board of Directors of CAT Alliance Ltd., a global joint venture consultancy specializing in environmental due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, divestures, and corporate accounting.

Previously employed in the U.S. EPA Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) headquarters office, Dr. Durant possesses an in-depth knowledge of regulations and policies applicable to RCRA and CERCLA sites.

Dr. Durant holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, a Master's degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor's degree in Geology from Colgate University.

Helen Dawson, Ph.D., Principal Environmental Engineer, Technical and Regulatory Expert

Dr. Dawson provides consulting services and litigation support for contaminated site characterization and remediation. She is renowned in the field of vapor intrusion (VI) assessment, having developed many of the technical resources relied on by U.S. EPA for VI assessment. She has successfully negotiated cleanup goals less stringent than generic levels for clients' VI sites to support site remediation and redevelopment. She has analyzed clients' historical environmental response actions relative to the changing status of VI guidance and practice over the past 15 years, and has prepared expert reports for litigation support. She has evaluated historical data and performed transport and fate modeling for contaminant migration through soil and groundwater.

Dr. Dawson was an Assistant Professor for eight years at CSM before becoming a Regional Hydrogeologist with the U.S. EPA Superfund Program in Denver for a decade and more recently Chief of the Superfund Science Policy Branch with the U.S. EPA in Washington for four years. As a result of her experience, Dr. Dawson provides a unique perspective merging technical proficiency and regulatory policy.  

Dr. Dawson holds a Ph.D. in Civil/Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, a Master's degree in Geochemistry from Colorado School of Mines (CSM), and a Bachelor's degree in Geology from Stanford University.

Michael Berman, P.E., CHMM, Senior Principal, Business and Commercial Consultant

Mr. Berman has over 20 years of experience providing advice to a broad range of clients including private equity firms, law firms, petroleum/petrochemical producers; mine and railroad operators; electric utilities; industrial and consumer product manufacturers; pulp and paper companies; and waste disposal companies and authorities. His core expertise focuses on the nature and extent of risks to clients faced with business and commercial decisions related to real property transactions, financial reporting, insurance analysis, operational management optimization, and litigation. Mr. Berman is an internationally recognized practitioner focused on environmental due diligence (EDD), environmental liability valuation (ELV), and cost modeling. He has conducted risk and valuation analyses for thousands of industrial, commercial and multiple-use sites across the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe.

Mr. Berman is a Certified Hazardous Material Manager, and a Professional Engineer in Washington, D.C. and surrounding states.

Mr. Berman holds an M.Eng. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University, and a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Bucknell University.

Turgay Dabak, Ph.D., P.E., Principal, Water Resources Engineer

Dr. Dabak is a water resources engineer and has over 30 years of experience specializing in civil and environmental engineering and program management. Dr. Dabak's extensive experience includes hydrologic and hydraulic analyses; floodplain studies; dam safety; water quality; watershed management; analysis and design of stormwater best management practices, including low impact development/green infrastructure practices; stream restoration; and production of CAD drawings and specifications from conceptual to construction level. Dr. Dabak has also directed permitting, design, and construction of stormwater management and flood control facilities. His other skills include developing and presenting technical training seminars, designing and implementing outreach programs, and providing expert testimonies for private and public sector clients.

Dr. Dabak is a Professional Engineer in Maryland and Virginia.

Dr. Dabak holds a Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech, an M.S. and B.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey.
