Michele Briening Earns Licensed Site Remediation Professional Credential for New Jersey

Michele Briening, an engineer for Geosyntec Consultants based in New Jersey, recently earned accreditation as a New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP).

This credential for environmental professionals was created following ratification of the New Jersey Site Remediation Reform Act in 2009. The act moved the direct supervision of site remediation projects from case managers with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to certified LSRPs.

Practitioners who earn the LSRP certification are responsible for conducting site remediation projects across New Jersey with the objective of expediting site closures. All LSRPs have an obligation to protect public health and safety and the environment, as well as the authority to review and approve investigation and remediation work plans, develop closure documents, and exercise professional judgment to efficiently move sites through the assessment and remediation process to closure.

Ms. Briening is now one of three LSRPs at Geosyntec, including Scott Drew, an environmental scientist and an Associate of the firm, and Thomas Geiger, P.E., a senior environmental engineer. All three practitioners are based in New Jersey. Additionally, Mr. Drew is a current member of the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professionals Association.

In her nearly 10 years of experience in the environmental consulting and services field, Ms. Briening has gained significant expertise in NJDEP technical regulations. She has a strong track record in conducting environmental due diligence site assessments, subsurface investigations, and regulatory compliance assessments for industrial, commercial, and residential properties.

She also conducts Phase I environmental site assessments and Phase II subsurface investigations and has performed groundwater and soil remediation projects. In addition, Ms. Briening has extensive experience in guiding property owners through the application process for various states' brownfields and environmental remediation programs.
