Article Published by Ravi Arulanantham and Deepa Gandhi in the Remediation Journal

Ravi Arulanantham, Ph.D., (Oakland) and Deepa Gandhi, P.E., (San Francisco) co-published an article in the Spring 2015 issue of Remediation. The article, titled “California’s Low-Threat LUFT Site Closure Policy: Looking Forward,” emphasizes the way that policy can fullfil the role of risk management in environmental remediation, and it encourages the identification of additional categories of sites that are “low threat” in order to develop similar closure guidance to apply to a wider range of sites. The lead author is Paul Hadley, who recently retired from the Department of Toxic Substances Control.

In 2010, Cal-EPA appointed Ravi to a committee tasked with developing a low-threat petroleum case closure policy. The low-threat policy was adopted after going through peer review by the University of California, and became effective in August 2012. Ravi was primarily responsible for developing the technical justification documents that provided the basis for the low-threat criterion adopted by the state.
