Derek Tomlinson Among Instructors for Upcoming Course on LNAPL Science, Technology

Derek Tomlinson, P.E., P.Eng., a Geosyntec senior engineer and hydrogeologist based in Pennsylvania, is among the instructors for a two-day course, "Light Nonaqueous-Phase Liquids (LNAPL): Science, Management, and Technology," set for October 1-2, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in Garden Grove, California.

The event, part of a series offered by the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC), is hosted by ITRC member agencies California Department of Toxic Substances Control and the California Water Boards Training Academy. Pre-registration is required to attend.

The course is based on ITRC's Technical and Regulatory Guidance document, Evaluating LNAPL Remedial Technologies for Achieving Project Goals (LNAPL-2), and assists environmental practitioners with applying science-based solutions that assess, remediate, and close LNAPL-contaminated sites. The ITRC guidance was developed through the combined efforts of environmental professionals, including state and federal regulators, consultants, and industry and community stakeholders.

LNAPLs are organic liquids such as gasoline, diesel, and similar petroleum hydrocarbon products that cannot be blended with water and are less dense than water. Understanding LNAPLs is important because such liquids appear in the subsurface at thousands of remediation sites across North America and often are the sole reason why a site remains "open." The spectrum of sites where LNAPL assessment and remediation efforts may take place include petroleum manufacturing and handling facilities, including refineries, bulk product terminals, gas stations, airports, and military bases.

In 2012, Mr.Tomlinson earned the ITRC's Industry Recognition Award for his contributions to the council's Dense Non-aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPL) Site Characterization team. Geosyntec is well represented on the team, which also includes Principal Mary deFlaun, Ph.D. (Princeton); Associate Gary Wealthall, Ph.D. (Guelph); and Associate Bruce Marvin (Oakland).
