Geosyntec to Develop Stormwater Capture Master Plan for Los Angeles

The Board of Water and Power Commissioners for the City of Los Angeles on May 3 approved the selection of Geosyntec Consultants to help the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) determine the potential for increasing local water supply through the capture of stormwater.

Historically, Los Angeles has imported more than 85 percent of its water supply, with the remainder coming from local sources. Local stormwater is considered an underutilized resource today, both in the city and its surrounding watershed.

During the next two years, Geosyntec practitioners will develop a Stormwater Capture Master Plan for LADWP that quantifies and characterizes the role that increased distributed and centralized stormwater capture can play in the city's long-term water supply portfolio.

"We are thrilled to have this opportunity to support Los Angeles in this critical step toward enhancing its water supply options," said Ken Susilo, P.E., a Principal water resources engineer for Geosyntec and the Project Director for the Stormwater Capture Master Plan.

"Once complete, the master plan will help the city integrate the development of local water supplies with additional goals for enhanced water quality while, at the same time, providing residents of the city with many other positive environmental benefits," Susilo said. "Our expectations are high — from our team, for the project, and for the region."

During this project, Geosyntec will investigate and create potential strategies for implementation of stormwater capture programs and projects in the city. The firm's practitioners also will also evaluate the multi-beneficial aspects of increased stormwater capture, including potential open space alternatives, improved downstream water quality, and peak flow attenuation in the Los Angeles River.

"I am extremely grateful for the confidence LADWP officials have placed in Geosyntec," said Mark Hanna, Ph.D., P.E., an Associate of the firm and Project Manager for the Stormwater Capture Master Plan. "This is a complex and highly visible project, and we welcome the challenge."
