Dave Heitz to Present on Compressed Natural Gas as Alternative Fuel to Solid Waste

Dave Heitz, P.E., a senior engineer based in Geosyntec's South Carolina office, will make a presentation October 4 during the 2012 fall technical conference of the Solid Waste Association of North America - North Carolina chapter (NC SWANA).

Mr. Heitz will present "Compressed Natural Gas As An Alternative Fuel in the Solid Waste Industry" beginning 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside, 301 North Water Street in Wilmington, NC.

In his presentation, Mr. Heitz will address the market drivers for conversion of vehicle fleets from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG) as well as potential guidelines fleet managers might consider prior to such a conversion. The presentation also will address the process that allows the solid waste industry to generate CNG from landfill gas (LFG), with a highlight featuring the first LFG-to-CNG project under way in the Southeast.

Mr. Heitz specializes in air quality permitting and regulatory compliance with an emphasis in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills and LFG. He has been involved with virtually all aspects of air permitting and compliance at MSW landfills, including several direct use and renewable electricity LFG-to-energy projects.

He has experience with air permitting and regulatory compliance at landfills in more than a dozen states and currently sits on the National SWANA Rules Committee. He was the lead for DeKalb County (Georgia) in the preparation of a $15 million Clean Cities Petroleum Reduction grant application to the U.S. Department of Energy, which was awarded and is being used to fund a LFG-to-CNG processing plant, two dispensing facilities, and the conversion of fleet vehicles to CNG.

NC SWANA is a non-profit, educational organization serving more than 400 public sector officials and solid waste professional responsible for the management and operation of MSW management systems. As an international association dedicated to the advancement of professionalism in the field, SWANA offers workshops, training programs, technical assistance, and certifications to help meet its member's ever-growing needs.
