Ron Johnson Presents Geotechnical Considerations for Infiltration Stormwater BMPs

SAN DIEGO, Ca. — Ron S. Johnson, PE, PG, presented "Geotechnical Considerations, Opportunities, and Strategies for Infiltration Stormwater BMPs" at the California Geotechnical Engineering Association's Annual Conference held in La Jolla, Ca., on April 28 — May 1, 2010.

Ron's presentation covered geotechnical considerations when evaluating sites or preparing design recommendations for infiltration best management practices (BMPs). Ron also discussed the geotechnical engineer's unique role in this process.

Often considered as an ideal solution for many water resources professionals, infiltration as a BMP has numerous benefits but also numerous restrictive conditions that limit its use. As a result, various design considerations should be evaluated when proposing infiltration BMPs. Ron described the challenges in modeling infiltration in southern California, where periods between rainfall can be very lengthy.
