Rula Deeb, Elisabeth Hawley, and David Major to Lead Webinar on PFAS Treatment Solutions
Rula Deeb, PhD, BCEEM, PMP; Elisabeth Hawley, PE; and David Major, PhD, BCES, will lead the webinar, “PFAS Treatment Solutions, Part 2: Destructive Technologies and a Lines-of-Evidence Approach to Confirm Treatment Efficacy,” on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 12:00 ET/9:00 a.m. PT.
Rula is a Senior Principal based in California with more than 25 years of experience focused on addressing the cross-media fate and transport of contaminants and remediating complex soil and groundwater sites impacted by nonaqueous-phase liquids. She is an internationally recognized PFAS expert and is highly regarded within the environmental community for her leadership in technical innovation.
Elisabeth is a Principal Engineer based in California with more than 17 years of experience advancing environmental remediation projects involving site characterization, fate and transport, remediation, site-closure strategies, and litigation support, focusing on emerging contaminants. She often focuses on PFAS and other contaminants of emerging concern.
Dave is a Senior Principal at Savron, a Geosyntec Company. With more than 30 years of experience, he has helped develop, demonstrate, and apply monitored natural attenuation, enhanced in situ bioremediation, and zero-valent-iron permeable reactive barriers. He has also helped commercialize the use of biomarkers, bioaugmentation for solvents, and smoldering combustion of heavy hydrocarbons (STAR technology).
The Geosyntec PFAS Webinar Series provides a thorough synthesis of the state of knowledge on managing PFAS-impacted sites. Subject matter experts from Geosyntec and the broader stakeholder community discuss PFAS technical, regulatory, and legal issues.
About the Webinar
Part 2 of this two-part webinar on PFAS treatment will explore commercially available and innovative treatment technologies, including promising approaches that are still being demonstrated at field scale. This presentation will provide the latest insights on technology maturity, treatment effectiveness, costs, and operational/feasibility considerations. Field-scale applications and demonstrations of innovative treatment train approaches for PFAS destruction will be described, along with lines of evidence to evaluate treatment effectiveness. A detailed case study will be presented on smoldering combustion, a non-incineration thermal treatment technology for PFAS in soils and sediment. This energy-efficient, flameless combustion process has been demonstrated at laboratory and field scales at multiple Canadian and US Air Force Bases to treat PFAS-containing soils to non-detect.
