Rudy Bonaparte Honored in ASCE Special Publication on Geoenvironmental Engineering

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently honored Rudy Bonaparte, PhD, PE, D.GE, F.ASCE, NAE, with the publication of a special edition book chronicling his contributions to geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering.

The book, Geoenvironmental Engineering: Honoring Rudolph Bonaparte, includes 15 invited, peer-reviewed papers presented at ASCE Geo-EnvironMeet 2025 during the ASCE Geo-Institute Geotechnical Frontiers Conference in March 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky.

By exploring Rudy’s legacy, the publication, edited by Susan E. Burns, PhD, PE; Dimitrios Zekkos, PhD, PE; and Shaivan Shivaprakash, PhD, offers insight into many aspects of geoenvironmental engineering. Topics include landfill design and construction, landfill monitoring (including settlement and emissions), waste and waste containment, and topics of interest to geotechnical engineering practice.

As Susan Burns and Dimitrios Zekkos emphasize in their preface, the authors explore the many ways Rudy’s work “has combined state of the art theory with the needs of practicing engineers to create and extend innovative solutions. . . . His boundless energy has resulted in contributions to our field that are not only technical in nature but also have substantial personal impact.”
