Marcelo Llano and Ali Nasseri-Moghaddam to Present at Workshops During 2025 CDA Conference

Marcelo Llano, PhD, RPEQ, and Ali Nasseri-Moghaddam, PhD, PEng, will serve as presenters during two workshops at the 2025 Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Conference.

Geosyntec is a platinum sponsor and is also sponsoring the conference awards lunch on October 1. Jagrut Jathal, Isabelle Hemmings, Manuel Monroy, Bahareh Vazhbakht, Emmanuel Olisa, and Silvia Mancini will also be in attendance and available at booth 28 during the conference.

Marcelo will present during the half-day workshop, “State-of-the-Art in Geomechanical Modelling of Non-Erosional-Type Breach in Tailings Dams,” on Sunday, September 28, at 8:30 a.m. CT. His co-presenters are Paul Simms of Carleton University, Jorge Macedo of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Joanna Chen of WSP. Mohammad Al-Mamun of Tetra Tech is the steering committee lead.

Ali will present during the full-day workshop, “TSF Closure Isn’t a Risky Business—If Done Right: A Workshop on Planning and Risk-Based Closure Design,” on Sunday, September 28, at 8:30 a.m. CT. His co-presenters are Andy Small and Jeff MacLean of Klohn Crippen Berger, Angela Bertin of Vale, Anthony Burnett of Suncor Energy, and Karine Doucet of Rio Tinto.

Marcelo is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Australia focused on providing geotechnical consulting and numerical modelling to large projects in Australia and Papa New Guinea. He specializes in numerical modelling, tailings and other dams, risk-reduction analyses, field instrumentation, soil mechanics and liquefaction, and seepage barriers.

Ali is a Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Ontario with more than 30 years of experience focused on geotechnical, dam, and structural engineering. His expertise includes dam engineering, earthquake engineering, risk management for underground structures, slope stability assessment, geotechnical design of tunneling works, and application of geophysics in geotechnical engineering.

The CDA Conference and Trade Show, hosted by the Canadian Dam Association, will bring together more than 500 dam professionals for workshops, technical sessions, and networking events.

About the Workshops

State-of-the-Art in Geomechanical Modelling of Non-Erosional-Type Breach in Tailings Dams

This half-day workshop will provide an overview of developments in the geomechanical modelling of non-erosional failures of tailings dams. It will address the simulation of mechanisms, including static/flow liquefaction, brittle collapse (strain-softening), and progressive failure in tailings facilities. Presenters will discuss the importance and sensitivity of constitutive model selection, material variability, and parameter uncertainty, as well as the implications for informing and supporting the numerical modelling of tailings dam failures, including with emerging methods like the material point method to simulate large deformations and post-failure behavior.

TSF Closure Isn’t a Risky Business—If Done Right: A Workshop on Planning and Risk-Based Closure Design

This two-session workshop will explore the process and phases of closure of tailings storage facilities with considerations that need to be made. It will also introduce risk considerations for successful closure with the concept of risk-informed closure design (RICD). Following each presentation, an open discussion will follow. Participants will have the opportunity to provide input on the concept of RICD and on the proposed Closure Bulletin content. Participant feedback will be used to update the draft Closure Bulletin based on workshop results.
