Kendall Bay Remediation Project Wins 2021 Chapter Award for New South Wales in Australia
Congratulations to Jemena’s Kendall Bay Remediation Project for winning two awards just announced by the New South Wales chapter of the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM): Project of the Year and Sustainable Remediation Project of the Year.
Once home to the largest gas works in the southern hemisphere, Kendall Bay is now surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The awards recognise the successful completion of this complex remediation program within the bay itself, between the suburbs of Cabarita and Breakfast Point. The project used innovative methods to ensure minimal disruption to nearby communities and residences and focused on openly engaging with residents throughout the project. The project is also noteworthy in that it featured the first use of in situ stabilisation (ISS) of subaqueous sediments in Australia. Full-scale remediation was completed in October 2020 and the project received regulatory acceptance shortly after the completion of ISS and capping works.
Geosyntec co-authored the Remediation Completion Report that was approved by the NSW EPA Accredited Contaminated Site Auditor, demonstrating that ISS can be successfully implemented in subaqueous sediments in Kendall Bay, breaking new ground in the use of advanced technologies in Australia. Also, the technical advice we provided allowed optimisations to the project’s environmental controls and significantly reduced having to use a reactive amendment content of the cap layer, resulting in significant cost savings.
As winner of these two AIPM awards in New South Wales, the project will progress to consideration for the national awards in these categories. Winners will be announced in early 2022.
The AIPM is a not-for-profit organisation that provides members with a range of services, including professional certifications, hundreds of events each year, and an annual awards program celebrating leadership in project excellence.
