Kathleen Brannen-Donnelly, Dylan Eberle, and Tom Wanzek Lead Technical Webinar on PFAS and Remediation
Kathleen Brannen-Donnelly, PhD, PG; Dylan Eberle, PhD; and Tom Wanzek, PhD, will lead the webinar, “Navigating PFAS Complexities: How PFAS Analytical Methods, Background Concentrations, and Multi-Source Impacts Can Affect PFAS Delineation and Response,” on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. PDT.
The Geosyntec PFAS Webinar Series provides a thorough synthesis of the state of knowledge on the management of PFAS-impacted sites. Subject matter experts from Geosyntec and the broader stakeholder community discuss PFAS technical, regulatory, and legal issues.
Kathleen is a Project Scientist based in Georgia who focuses on aqueous geochemistry, environmental statistics, and site characterization and supports related environmental litigation.
Dylan is a Project Geologist based in Massachusetts who focuses on site characterization, emerging contaminants, litigation support, and innovative remediation technologies.
Tom is a Senior Staff Scientist based in Oregon specializing in soil characterization, ecosystem restoration, and the fate and transport of PFAS in soil systems.
Abstract
Regulators have asked multiple clients to delineate PFAS concentrations in soil and groundwater at their sites. This webinar will describe three commonly encountered challenges and complexities related to PFAS delineation in soil and groundwater: (1) selection of PFAS analytical methods based on the specific project need; (2) background concentrations of PFAS due to off-site sources or widespread regional contamination, including resources for defining or establishing background concentrations; and (3) multi-source impacts and the application of forensic tools to differentiate between multiple sources and apportion responsibility for PFAS delineation efforts. These tools are particularly important when PFAS screening levels for delineation are low. Case studies will also be described.
