Juan Pestana Presented on Numerical Modeling and Crushable Granular Materials at CGS-SOS Workshop: Numerical Modeling in Geotechnical Engineering

Juan Pestana, Ph.D., PE, (California) presented “The Role of Numerical Modeling in Current Geotechnical Engineering Practice” and “The Behavior of Crushable Granular Materials” at the Canadian Geotechnical Society-Southern Ontario Section Workshop: Numerical Modeling in Geotechnical Engineering at 12:00 p.m. EST on February 4, 2021.

Juan Pestana is a Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer with more than 30 years of experience focused on geotechnical and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

The Canadian Geotechnical Society-Southern Ontario Section (CGS-SOS) represents the national organization at the local level, covering Southern Ontario. The CGS-SOS was established in the early 1970s and forms the largest region of the Society. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for continuing education (through lectures and seminars), and for constructive dialogue and sharing of experiences. This is accomplished through organizing events on about a monthly basis.

The Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) is an independent, federally incorporated, non-profit learned society that exists to serve and promote the geotechnical and geoscience community in Canada. It encompasses a wide spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines within the geotechnical field. Membership is open to individuals from all sectors including private consulting, universities, industry, contracting, and public services.

The Role of Numerical Modeling in Current Geotechnical Engineering Practice

The development of a final design often requires that we evaluate the performance of numerous alternatives in terms of the constructability, performance, cost, and the risk of failure (among other aspects). This presentation gave a brief introduction of numerical modeling and as well as applicability for feasibility, detail design stages and forensic investigations.

The Behavior of Crushable Granular Materials

As crushing occurs, potentially large increases in the specific surface area (appearance of fines and changes in particle size distribution) will cause a rapid decrease of hydraulic conductivity that cannot be explained by changes in density alone. Crushing is a time dependent phenomenon enhanced by increases in temperature. This presentation discussed these mechanisms and the proposed constitutive model to describe the variation of mechanical and flow properties with stress and temperature.
