John Seymour to Speak on Geomembrates for CCR Containment at the Flexible Geomembrane Institute Webinar

John Seymour, PE, will present “Geomembranes for Containment of Coal Combustion Residuals” during the Flexible Geomembrane Institute (FGI) Webinar on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. ET.

This webinar will be recorded and made available in Australia, South Africa, and Japan.

John is a Senior Principal Civil Engineer based in Illinois with more than 40 years of experience focused on site remediation, management of coal combustion residuals (CCR), deep foundation engineering, and construction management. His clients include major electric utilities based in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic United States, as well as PRP groups. As a leader in the design of new CCR treatment and disposal facilities, of their expansion, and of their closure, John routinely provides innovative engineering solutions to address new federal regulations and certifications of compliance.

The FGI is an industry-sponsored nonprofit institute dedicated to advancing the use of fabricated flexible geomembranes through education, research, and technology transfer. The FGI is housed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Abstract

Geomembranes, commonly known as flexible membrane liners (FMLs), have been used for more than 50 years at CCR containment facilities as landfill bottom liners, cover barriers, and covers over CCR surface impoundments closed in place. This webinar will present different applications and important technical and regulatory considerations for success. For example, what are the considerations for minimum protective cover soil where the FML is placed directly on top of CCR without a soil subgrade?
