Joe Cleary to Guest Lecture on Pharmaceuticals in the Environment at Manhattan College

Joe Cleary, PE, BCEE, (New Jersey) will present “Pharmaceuticals in the Environment” to graduate students in Dr. Mahbuboor Choudhury’s seminar class, Emerging Issues in Environmental Engineering and Public Health, at Manhattan College at 6:30 p.m. EDT on April 25, 2023. His talk will address inherent risks, technological solutions, and how well the technologies are working.

Joe is an Environmental Engineer based in New Jersey with more than 46 years of experience focused on industrial wastewater, water reuse, energy recovery energy, and the treatment of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Manhattan College’s environmental engineering programs provide advanced training in environmental process engineering, water quality assessment modeling, geoenvironmental engineering, and environmental management. Nationally recognized for producing well-prepared environmental engineers, the program dates back to 1939. Six of its alumni have been inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, and it is the alma mater of many engineers working on complex projects that address creation of sustainable environments in New York City.

Description

Joe will present on pharmaceutical industry water and wastewater trends, including pharmaceuticals in the environment. He will outline manufacturing trends, vaccine production, active pharmaceutical ingredients such as antibiotics, and treatment and water reuse technologies to remove pharmaceutical actives and achieve zero liquid discharge. Joe will also discuss numerous case studies from more than 40 years working in pharmaceutical and other industries as a subject-matter expert on water and wastewater management and treatment of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical actives and PFAS. Joe will also discuss tools used on these projects, including treatability testing and process modeling.
