Jamey Rosen to Present on Data Management and Visualization for Dams at FEMA National Dam Safety Program Technical Seminar

Jamey Rosen, PGeo, will present “Dam Construction Data Management in USACE” at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) National Dam Safety Program Technical Seminar. The presentation will take place on February 13, 2024, in Emmetsburg, Maryland, at 10:10 a.m. EST.

Jamey is a Senior Principal Geoscientist with more than 25 years of experience focused on Geospatial Information Management System design and development. Jamey has built systems to validate, manage, analyze, and visualize construction, geotechnical, and environmental data for projects and facilities in the United States and Canada.

The FEMA National Dam Safety Program Technical Seminar is a two-day event that brings together professional dam safety practitioners to discuss emerging challenges, research, technologies, and regulations to support safe and successful operations of dam infrastructure in the United States. The theme of this year’s conference is “Dam Safety 101: Design, Analysis, Construction, and Risk Management.”

Abstract

Data Management and Visualization During Dam Construction and Rehabilitation: Lessons learned From USACE Projects

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has directed several dam construction and rehabilitation projects in recent years with varying degrees of complexity in data management specifications. This presentation will discuss several methods and technologies applied on these projects to manage, analyze, and visualize data collected from barrier wall (foundation) excavations, grout curtains, concrete and earthwork placement, and more. These methods and technologies are relevant to the quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) of the projects’ construction activities and, as importantly, allow for a real-time dam safety review of construction-related information and performance monitoring data. The technologies and methods specified at USACE dam construction projects cover some aspects of data collection; details on secure data and file nomenclature, sharing, and storage through web protocols; data storage, QC, QA, and analysis with enterprise database schema design and documentation; and data visualization through 2D and 3D geospatial tools and dashboards. All of these methods require documentation via a formal data management plan. Each of these items will be introduced via case studies that include the Herbert Hoover Dike and Moose Creek Dam Cutoff Walls, monolith and spillway construction at the Chickamauga Lock and Dam and Pipestem Dam, and others that describe the benefits of these methods as well as challenges and lessons learned for the owner (USACE), contractors, laboratories, and consultants.
