Gloria Teague Led an Introductory Python Course for the Florida Section of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Continuing Education Program
Gloria Teague (Florida) led a one-day course entitled “An Introduction to Python for Scientists and Engineers” as part of the Florida Section of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (FASABE) Continuing Education Program hosted by the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern on July 9, 2021.
Gloria Teague is a Project Water Resource Engineer based in Florida with more than 10 years of experience focused on developing creative solutions to give water resource managers the tools they need to make informed decisions and develop resilient and sustainable strategies. She has used Python scripting to support work developing total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), stormwater master plans, nonpoint pollution management studies, water supply studies, stormwater best management practice (BMP) evaluations, and land use change/climate change/sea-level rise assessments.
The American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers (ASABE) is the society for those graduating with that degree. Teague is an alumna of the University of Florida and has been involved with FASABE since 2010.
About the Course
Python is an interpreted, high-level programming language that supports multiple programming paradigms. Python includes a comprehensive standard library as well as many additional libraries developed to interact with common software applications (e.g. ArcGIS, Microsoft Office). Participants were given an overview of the programming structure and its capabilities as well as guided through the installation of an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), PyCharm, on their computer. Common libraries (i.e. Pandas, Matplotlib, ArcPy) used for spatial and temporal data management and graphic creation were introduced. Python applications were presented, and participants learned how to develop scripts and view results/graphics.
