Glenn is a Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Georgia with more than 30 years of experience focused on the areas of geotechnical earthquake engineering and engineering seismology. His practice includes seismic risk assessment for civil infrastructure.
Many dam owners and regulators in North America are transitioning from standards-based to risk-informed dam safety programs. In Canada, the risk-informed approach is encouraged by the Canadian Dam Association 2013 Dam Safety Guidelines. This presentation will highlight some of the key differences between the two approaches, present concepts such as tolerable and acceptable risk, and discuss how different types of uncertainty are characterized and modeled in a risk analysis. A simple example based on the risk of oversleeping is presented that illustrates many of the basic concepts used in quantitative risk analyses of more complex civil infrastructure systems including dams.
CGS-SOS represents the national organization at the local level, covering Southern Ontario. CGS-SOS was established in the early 1970s and forms the largest region of the Society. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for continuing education (through lectures and seminars), and for constructive dialogue and sharing of experiences. This is accomplished through organizing events on about a monthly basis.
