Geosyntec Practitioners Teach ASDSO Course on Earthquake Engineering for Embankment Dams
Lelio Mejia, PhD, PE, GE, NAE; Glenn Rix, PhD, PE; Christie Hale, PhD; and Kathleen (Kate) Darby, PhD, PE, will teach “Earthquake Engineering for Embankment Dams” at the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) Seminar.
The seminar will be held August 5 through 7, 2025, in Austin, Texas.
Lelio is a Senior Principal Engineer based in California with more than 35 years of experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering. For many years, he has focused on the challenges of dam and levee engineering. He is a leading international authority in this field, with emphasis on the seismic design and performance of dam structures.
Glenn is a Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Georgia with more than 30 years of experience focused on geotechnical earthquake engineering and engineering seismology. His practice includes seismic risk assessment for civil infrastructure, and he is a leading authority on in situ seismic methods.
Christie is a Senior Professional Seismic Hazard Analyst based in Texas with more than 10 years of experience focused on the evaluation of seismic hazards and the assessment of seismic safety for critical infrastructure projects, including dams, landfills, hospitals, and energy systems.
Kate is a Senior Staff Engineer based in California with experience in geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, and dam engineering. She offers experience conducting safety reviews, evaluating cone penetrometer testing (CPT) data, performing stability analyses, and conducting liquefaction triggering evaluations.
This course will provide instruction on the general subject of earthquake engineering of embankment dams. It will begin with a historical perspective on dam performance during earthquakes, offer an overview of basic concepts related to earthquakes, and progressively address more specialized subjects.
Since its founding in 1983, ASDSO has worked to improve the condition and safety of dams and lessen the risk of dam failures by offering education, supporting state dam-safety programs, and fostering a unified dam-safety community.
