Hannah McIntyre, PhD; Tom Wanzek, PhD; Elisabeth Hawley, PE; John Merrill, PE; and Rula Deeb, PhD, BCEEM, PMP, coauthored “Assessing UV/SGM Photocatalytic PFAS Destruction Using a Lines of Evidence Approach” in the November 2024 edition of Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation.
Megan Hart from the University of Missouri–Kansas City was also a coauthor.
Hannah is a Senior Staff Engineer based in Missouri who focuses on the remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). She helps develop guidance for PFAS remediation in collaboration with the United States Department of Defense and the United Kingdom Environment Agency.
Tom is a Senior Staff Scientist based in Oregon specializing in soil characterization, ecosystem restoration, and the fate and transport of PFAS. He brings expertise in PFAS from aqueous film-forming foam in saturated soil systems and develops tools to estimate soil sorptive capacity for PFAS.
Elisabeth is a Principal Engineer based in California with more than 16 years of experience advancing environmental remediation, with a focus on emerging contaminants. She often supports site characterization, fate and transport assessments, remediation, site closure, and litigation.
Rula is a Senior Principal based in California with more than 28 years of experience in private practice and academia focused on the cross-media fate and transport of emerging contaminants, including PFAS, and the remediation of complex soil and groundwater sites impacted by nonaqueous-phase liquids.
John is a Professional Engineer based in California with experience in site investigation and remediation, litigation support, and applied research in collaboration with university partners. John focuses on emerging contaminants, including PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, and 1,2,3-trichloropropane.
Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation publishes papers addressing treatment technologies, pairing innovative research with practical solutions. It also features columns, news briefs, and equipment news. The journal is published by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), which advances groundwater knowledge while supporting, connecting, and advocating for members.
Abstract
A recent research article described a multiple lines of evidence approach to demonstrate the effectiveness of PFAS remediation technologies. These lines of evidence were developed by an interdisciplinary group including academic researchers, practitioners, and vendors. This article provides a brief overview of the lines of evidence approach and presents a practical application to a validated PFAS treatment technology that utilizes ultraviolet-activated photocatalytic silica-based granular media (UV/SGM) to filter concentrated PFAS-containing liquids and achieve PFAS destruction. This case study illustrates the application of the lines of evidence approach and summarizes work done to validate an innovative PFAS treatment technology.
