Geosyntec Expands Services for Mining Clients in Australia with Geotechnical Lab
Geosyntec has opened Geosyntec REELab, a specialized geotechnical laboratory focused on characterizing the mechanical behavior of mine tailings. This lab in North Fremantle, Western Australia will support mine operators in Australia and beyond.
The facility offers advanced geotechnical testing supported by comprehensive consulting, building both on the geotechnical acumen of Geosyntec staff and on Red Earth Engineering’s expertise in mine tailings and foundation soils. Our specialists will help clients understand and address issues including shear strength and liquefaction and conduct consolidation tests.
The new lab is led by David Reid, PhD, CPEng, a Principal Tailings Engineer at Red Earth Engineering, who brings more than 12 years of experience in consulting in the tailings industry. In addition, after receiving his PhD from the University of Western Australia, where he focused on geotechnical engineering of tailings, David spent an additional 7 years as a research fellow with the university’s tailings group. His work there advanced the profession’s understanding of liquefaction, slope stability, and risk evaluation.
“We are excited to offer the high-quality testing that is necessary to meet the requirements of existing and emerging standards for tailings storage facilities,” said David.
Under David’s direction, Geosyntec REELab conducts testing with the highest level of expertise the industry has to offer. We offer clients and stakeholders the benefit of the latest science and accurate testing on which to develop practical and lasting solutions for their tailings projects.
In addition to supporting the work of Geosyntec and Red Earth Engineering, our advanced geotechnical testing facility offers broader tailings industry precise and reliable data regarding material properties of tailings and foundation soils. Available testing includes monotonic and cyclic triaxial tests, direct simple shear cells, constant rate of strain testing, and slurry consolidometer testing.
