This expansion, spurred by growth and expanding client base, reflects our commitment to providing exceptional service and accommodating the increasing demand for our expertise.
Our Grand Rapids team conducts investigations of contaminated sites and develops site-specific strategies to remediate or manage impacted soil, soil gas, sediment, and groundwater. They also guide clients through intricate state and federal regulatory processes to support innovative site closures. In addition, our team, with support from our national subject-matter experts, provide due diligence, environmental compliance, and permitting services.
Our Grand Rapids team also excels in solid waste planning, design, and management, coal combustion residual (CCR) investigations, and compliance. They develop conceptual site models using a leading-edge Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy (ESS) approach, and they plan and complete brownfield redevelopment projects to revitalize communities.
In collaboration with staff from our Ann Arbor and Detroit offices, our West Michigan team partners with clients as a trusted advisor. They identify environmental risks and liabilities, and they develop site-specific strategies to help clients manage and mitigate risk. Geosyntec’s investment in West Michigan strengthens our ability to support existing and new clients with a diverse range of technical and consulting services.

Matt Vander Eide, PG, CPG, a Senior Principal Hydrogeologist, leads the office. He brings more than 26 years of local and national experience investigating and remediating contaminants and sites, including nearly 60 sites impacted with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Matt has successfully supported public, private, and nonprofit clients with brownfield redevelopment projects and site investigations and liability management at sites including airports, landfills, industrial and manufacturing properties, power plants, natural gas storage and transmission, dry cleaners, fueling stations, and greenfield sites. He has also worked with Michigan’s environmental regulatory agency, EGLE and the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART), to develop, implement, and manage statewide PFAS sampling and data management programs.
Key Professionals
Colin Plank, CPG, is a Senior Principal Geologist with more than 20 years of experience developing process-based conceptual site models for complex groundwater remediation sites. He helps federal and private-sector clients develop more efficient characterization and remediation strategies for traditional and emerging contaminants, including PFAS. He is a developer of the ESS approach to aquifer characterization, and coauthor of the USEPA’s “Best Practices for Environmental Site Management: A Practical Guide for Applying Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy to Improve Conceptual Site Models.” Since the time of this publication, ESS has become recognized nationally as a best practice for developing conceptual site models.
Samuel Stafford, PE, is a Senior Engineer with more than 20 years of experience in the civil and environmental engineering components of civil, waste, water-resources, and environmental projects, primarily in Michigan and Florida. He often applies his broad technical expertise to projects involving solid-waste landfills, ash monofils, wastewater ponds, mine reclamation, and the CCR Rule. To accomplish this, Sam develops technical specifications, construction drawings, and bid packages; manages groundwater monitoring programs; performs statistical analyses; and conducts groundwater remediation and site investigations.
Chase Butler is a Senior Professional Environmental Chemist with Gradient, a member of the Geosyntec family of companies. She brings experience designing sampling plans and testing protocols related to PFAS and TSCA requirements, assessing data quality, and interpreting data to help fulfill various regulatory obligations. Chase has provided technical support for chemical registration and compliance across geographic regions and countries and advises on the use of appropriate chemicals for read-across of toxicological data.
Joel Conzelmann, PE, is a Project Engineer with more than 7 years of consulting experience in environmental engineering and remediation. His focus areas include remedial planning, design, and construction and landfill management. He often handles site investigation, conceptual site modeling, remedial objectives development, and data management and visualization at sites with contaminated sediment, soil, and groundwater. He has served as the field-team lead and site health and safety officer on numerous site investigation projects and as a resident engineer on multiple remedial construction projects.
Ben Giese is a scientist and site manager who helps design and implement engineered solutions to environmental, hydrological, and geotechnical problems. He is a versatile analyst, troubleshooter, and field leader focused on contaminated site management, investigation, and remediation, particularly within the Superfund remedial process.
