Geosyntec is pleased to announce and congratulate the winners of its seventh annual student paper contest for 2016.

The winner of the competition is Tyler Marcet (Tufts University, Advisors: Dr. Natalie Capiro and Dr. Kurt Pennell) for “Impacts of Low Temperature Thermal Treatment on the Activity of PCE-to-ethane Dechlorinating Consortium.” Tyler receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the Battelle Palms Springs conference in May.

The two second place prizes of $500 each are awarded to Yanlai Han (Texas Tech University, Advisor: Dr. Weile Yan) for “Enhancing the Performance Zero-valent Iron for Remediation of Chlorinated Ethenes through Facile Surface Sulfidation Treatment” and to Yi Yang (University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Advisor: Dr. Frank Loffler) for “Microbial Reductive Dechlorination of Vinyl Chloride to Ethene in the Absence of Dehalococcoides mccartyi.”

The three third place prizes of $300 each are awarded to Rebecca Solinger (University of Western Ontario, Advisors: Dr. Jason Gerhard, Dr. Gavin Grant, and Grant Scholes) for “Optimizing STARx Hot Pad Systems with Numerical Modeling,” Christopher Ruybal (Colorado School of Mines, Advisors: Dr. John McCray and Terri Hogue) for “Real-time Field Measurements of Aqueous Methane in Ground Water for Monitoring near Shale Gas and Coalbed Methane Development,” and Yuyi Jin (University of Waterloo, Advisor: Dr. Neil Thomson) for “Persulfate Activation by MnO2 Particle Generated through Permanganate Decomposition with Organic Contaminants.”

This contest recognizes and rewards students performing cutting-edge research related to the assessment and treatment of chemical contaminants in soil and groundwater. Geosyntec heard from students studying environmental engineering, hydrogeology, geochemistry, or other relevant scientific/engineering disciplines, and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their research to an audience of senior environmental practitioners at Geosyntec.

Several of the previous contest winners have gone on to have successful careers at Geosyntec.
