Fabianna Arriaga to Moderate the Women in Geosynthetics Round Table at Geosynthetics 2023

Fabiana Arriaga, Ph.D., (California) will moderate the Women in Geosynthetics Round Table Event at the Geosynthetics 2023 Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday, February 6 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. CST

Fabiana’s co-moderator is Jordan Wiechmann of Intertape Polymer Group; panelists include Tina Oliver of Seaman Corp, Maya Innis of International Cover Systems, Roxalana Dobransky of Layfield Group, and Kirstin Sample-Lord of Villanova University.

Fabiana has more than fifteen years of academic and professional experience in geotechnical engineering, methane mitigation, and vapor intrusion.  Her dissertation was titled, “Response of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Structures under Working Stress and Failure Conditions.” Research work included testing geosynthetic-reinforced slope models in a geotechnical centrifuge until failure to evaluate the stress distribution along the reinforcements. Fabiana has supervised geotechnical subsurface exploration programs, designed retaining structures, and provided technical assistance during dam rehabilitation, dam replacement, and new dam construction.

Geosynthetics 2023 features a robust program of technical paper sessions, energetic panel discussions, workshops, half-day short courses, and special sessions organized by supporting organizations. In addition, suppliers to the geosynthetic industry will showcase their products and services, and for those new to the industry, an educational zone will provide samples of geosynthetics and offer basic geosynthetic education.

Abstract

The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute at the University of Illinois created “Women in Geosynthetics” to promote the advancement of women in the geosynthetic industry through education, networking, and mentoring. The Women in Geosynthetics round table will discuss topics including the following:

  • Work/life balance
  • The benefits of social media
  • Opportunities for women in the geosynthetics industry
  • Recruitment of women into the geosynthetics industry
  • Professional and collegiate mentorship opportunities
  • Partnerships between women professionals and women graduate and undergraduate students
