Isolation and Characterization of Psychrophilic Denitrifers from Woodchip Bioreactors for Bioaugmentation Application

Emily will present a session entitled, "Isolation and Characterization of Psychrophilic Denitrifers from Woodchip Bioreactors for Bioaugmentation Application."

This study employed a culture-dependent approach to isolate and characterize low temperature-adapted denitrifying microorganisms from four different bioreactors in Minnesota. The study demonstrated that inoculating these nitrate-reducing bacteria strains could enhance nitrate removal in woodchip bioreactors at low temperature conditions, thus increasing the efficiency of woodchip bioreactors as a feasible strategy to prevent nitrate in agricultural wastewater from reaching bodies of water and causing eutrophication.
