Self-sustaining Treatment for Active Remediation (STAR) is a novel technology based on the principles of smoldering combustion where the contaminants are the source of fuel.

Recent work conducted with support from Chevron has resulted in the development of the STARx Reactor system, an ex situ application of the STAR technology. The STARx system is well suited for the treatment of excavated soils, drilling muds, or other contaminated soils. In addition, STARx can be used for the treatment of organic wastes such as waste oils and lagoon sludges when the waste material is mixed with a porous media to establish the conditions required for smoldering combustion reactions to take place. Like in situ STAR, STARx is self-sustaining following a short duration, low energy input ?ignition event', such that the energy of the reacting wastes / contaminants is used to pre-heat and initiate combustion in the adjacent area, propagating a combustion front through the reactor, provided a sufficient flux of oxygen is supplied. The STARx system is capable of destroying greater than 99.9% of contaminant / waste mass and has many potential applications to the oil and gas and chemical manufacturing industries. This presentation will present background information on the technology and highlight the development of a 10-foot tall, 3-foot diameter prototype reactor which has been rigorously tested over the course of the past year and a half to evaluate the ignition system, operational robustness, reactor material robustness, range of operation conditions (temperature and pressure as a function of time and space), the factors affecting burn rates and volatile emissions, and treatment efficiency / remediation performance. In particular, specific attention will be given to the work conducted to evaluate the effects of water content, air flow rate, and heat recovery on processing rates and destruction efficiencies.
