Ali Nasseri-Moghaddam, Ph.D., P.Eng. (Ontario) has joined Geosyntec as a Principal Geotechnical Engineer. He brings broad expertise in dam and earthquake engineering, risk management for underground structures, slope stability assessments, geotechnical design of tunneling works, and applications of geophysics in geotechnical engineering.
Ali has led multidisciplinary projects for his clients, providing geotechnical investigations, foundation design, and construction quality assurance and quality control for major wind farms, infrastructure, and landfills. His project work includes the assessment of dynamic properties of subsurface soil layers, geophysical investigations, detail settlement and bearing capacity evaluations, and the design of massive raft foundations for wind turbines.
He played key roles in assisting clients with investigations, data analyses, geohazard assessments, report preparation, and risk evaluations for major tunneling projects, including sewage systems and forcemains. Additionally, Ali has completed dam safety reviews, dam and water retaining structures design, and mining dam designs and assessments. His recent major roles include helping clients complete safety assessments, geotechnical evaluations and stability/seepage analyses, seismic settlement assessments and failure mode analyses, audit inspections, and mine closure cost estimates for dams and water/tailing retaining structures.
To advance the state of practice, Ali has promoted the use of the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method to assess soil dynamic properties, characterize subsurface soil and rock properties, and locate underground cavities and fault/joint locations within rock formations. Based on field experiments, he developed a method to enhance the quality of geophysical field data entitled Multi Geometry Approach for MASW Survey (Nasseri-Moghaddam and Park, 2010).
Ali currently serves as the Chair of the Canadian Geotechnical Society, Southern Ontario Section. He is an active member of the Canadian Dam Association and the Canadian Association of Earthquake Engineering. He has also been a lecturer at the University of Waterloo, where he taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses including Advanced Soil Testing in Geotechnical Engineering. Prior to joining Geosyntec, Ali served as an Associate and Senior Engineer at GHD, specializing in geotechnical and structural earthquake engineering.
