Elizabeth Rhine (South Carolina) will present "Smoldering Combustion (STAR and STARx) for the Treatment of Contaminated Soils and Liquid Organic Wastes" at the South Carolina Association of Environmental Professionals (SCAEP) in Columbia, South Carolina from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. on January 17, 2019.
Elizabeth is a Principal Environmental Scientist based in South Carolina with more than 25 years of professional experience focused on the characterization and remediation of impacted sites in the chemical, oil and gas, and transportation sectors. Her work for clients has focused primarily on groundwater remediation of hazardous waste sites under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), indoor air quality evaluations, regulatory compliance, environmental liability valuations, transactional due diligence, and brownfield redevelopment.
SCAEP was founded in 1992 as a non-profit organization to: promote harmony, cooperation, and mutual understanding among environmental consultants, regulatory agencies, educational professionals, business professionals, etc.; allow members of the various disciplines represented, both public and private, the opportunity to interact at a social level; encourage the transfer of technical information; provide a vehicle for continuing technical education; foster the highest standards of professional ethics within the environmental field; and combat unfair practices within the environmental field.
Elizabeth will be reviewing the principles behind self-sustaining treatment for active remediation (STAR), also known as smoldering, and presenting several case studies. STAR is an in situtechnique for addressing coal tar, creosote, and other heavy petroleum hydrocarbons, as well as solvents that are co-contaminants with these low-volatility, high-energy compounds. STARx was developed as an ex situmethod for addressing these compounds using the HottPad. This technique was developed by Savron, a subsidiary of Geosyntec, and access to this technology is available to all consulting firms.
