Dr. Durant is a principal based in Maryland with more than 15 years of experience in environmental science and engineering. He focuses on the characterization and remediation of industrial and federal properties impacted by chlorinated solvents and other organic compounds.
Specializing in the design of in situ groundwater remediation systems, Dr. Durant has developed site-specific groundwater remediation systems using in situ bioremediation, chemical oxidation, nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI), and co-solvent flushing technologies. His experience spans more than 30 sites in the United States and Europe. He is recognized internationally for his expertise in chlorinated solvent remediation.
Advancing the State-of-the-Practice
Dr. Durant has co-authored guidance manuals regarding chlorinated solvent remediation technologies for the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Air Force, and the national environmental protection agencies of Denmark and Sweden. Dr. Durant’s work has also advanced the state-of-the-practice regarding use of nanoscale ZVI and treatment technologies for sulfa drugs and phosphorothionate pesticides. Dr. Durant is the co-developer of a short course entitled “In Situ Remediation Using Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron: Fundamentals and Field Applications” available through the Battelle In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium. A former employee of U.S. EPA headquarters office in Washington D.C., Dr. Durant has lead successful client/regulator negotiations for projects in over a dozen states.
Dr. Durant holds a faculty position with Johns Hopkins University’s Part-Time Engineering Program. He has co-authored more than 30 publications on basic and applied groundwater remediation technology research.
